I am native here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Everyday I see the effects that trash has made on the beauty of our islands, littered all over our roads and streets. I’m tired of hearding the vac tanker moving down the street clearing up our mess. I am concerned for so many reasons. For starters, our ocean provides food and fun for the people here, the trash and litter have become so extreme in some areas, that the wind picks it up and carries it right into the water.
My concern with this is what happens as a result of that. Just several weeks ago, my son and I were walking down the beach, there was a group of people standing around something, and as we approached, I realized it was a turtle. No one had touched it, but it was scared, and I don’t know if you know this..Turtles CRY. This turtle was crying. Here in Hawaii it’s illegal to handle a turtle, but in this particular case I could not walk away from it. It broke my heart standing there watching now the turtle, and my son cried.
I got level to this creature in hopes to find what was wrong with it. I lifted its fins to look for abrasions or battle wounds and found nothing. When I tried to examine the under part of it’s neck, that’s when I saw it. A tiny white piece of plastic was slightly poking out from its mouth. At this particular time, a man across the beach, another native started yelling at our crowd that had grown since we had first walked up. He was obviously upset, and I knew it was serious because I was handling this very protected creature that was suffering on the beach.
He continued to walk toward us, and I continued to observe the plastic I had just found. I had heard of plastic bags, and those six pack soda plastics killing these defenseless animals, but this was my very first experience seeing it, first hand. I decided that I was going to try to get the plastic out of this poor turtles mouth but, I had no idea how to go about doing it. These creatures are for the most part very timid animals and are known to be harmless, but I knew that their jaws are as strong as those of a fully grown Pit bull dog.
Was I afraid..Yes! But, I knew I had to act quick. The man across the beach was very close now, and he was yelling at me already. I grabbed on to that tiny piece and started pulling. As soon as I started to yank on it, the turtle opened it’s mouth like it knew I was trying to help it, and oh my goodness. Apparently, the bag had inflated in its belly, like a blown up balloon and it was stuck in the throat area, full of seaweed and small fish.
There really was no way for me to help, but to stick my fingers in his throat to get all this stuff out. I was so afraid for this little animal, and for my fingers, I had to take a moment to think. At that moment the man who had been yelling walked up. He looked at me, looked at the animal, and said to me “I will hold his mouth open my dear, and you must complete what you have started”.
Without another thought, I put my hand in this turtles mouth and pulled out what was obstructing its breathing and I continued to pull out the bag. When I was done, my son was still in tears, except now they were tears of joy. The crowd among us were in tears, and the native man from across the beach smiled down at me. The turtle now breathing right, and probably feeling loads better, looked me straight in my eyes.I swear I felt a “Thank you” before it scooted it’s way back to the ocean.
When I watched it swim away the emotions that flooded inside of me hit the surface and the tears came in a rush. I had just saved this beautiful creature from something that could have been prevented. I hope this message brings awareness to those who litter, and throw things out their windows all the time. Our roads and streets are close to not just our own homes, but homes of those, who unlike us, cannot protect themselves from the effects that it has. As my son and I left, we picked up every single piece of plastic, or trash, we found on the road leading to our house.I will never forget that day for as long as I live, and I will use the story to educate people on the realities of what trash, and littering can cause.
